What Age Should A Child Start Going To The Dentist? (A GUIDE FOR PARENTS)

Bringing your child to see a dentist for the first time is a big step for parents, but it’s a crucial part of keeping your child’s teeth and gums healthy. So, at what age should a child start going to the dentist? Determining when you should schedule that first appointment is easy, and Kinder Smiles in New Jersey is here to help.

What is a dentist?

Dentists are oral health care providers who have the training and education to provide treatment to children. Pediatric dentists such as Dr. Engel here at Kinder Smiles possess the knowledge and skill to better take care of your child’s teeth than a general dentist. For instance, we are particularly knowledgeable about baby teeth and have training in child development and psychology that helps us treat children more adequately.

What is the difference between a general dentist and a pediatric dentist?

While a general dentist and a pediatric dentist both graduate from dental school, a pediatric dentist like Dr. Engel specializes in treating infants and toddlers. Pediatric dentists have additional training that gives them knowledge of child development, psychology, and growth that a general dentist may not possess.

Pediatric dentists are experts on child-specific dental issues, offering parents a professional who can diagnose and treat problems that arise with developing teeth and jaws. They also offer kid-friendly environments so children are calmer and receive a more positive experience. And since pediatric dentists are so knowledgeable about child behavior, they will be able to use appropriate techniques to calm, treat, communicate with, and educate children.

What Age Should A Child Start Going To The Dentist?

Once teething begins at around the age of three months, you may notice your child pulling on their ears or crying more than normal. This is due to the discomfort of the baby teeth beginning to push through the gums.

The first tooth should erupt at six or seven months. When parents see this tooth, it’s time to schedule baby’s first dentist appointment so the pediatric dentist can check to make sure the tooth is growing normally.

Does my child need to visit the dentist regularly?

Ideally, parents should schedule a dentist appointment for their child every six months for a basic check-up and cleaning according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. This helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease by allowing the dentist to spot cavities or other problems early.  It also establishes regular dentist appointments as part of your child’s oral healthcare routine and makes them familiar with how the dentist’s office works, thus alleviating any fears they could develop otherwise.

Beyond the normal check-up, Kinder Smiles encourages parents to schedule an appointment anytime if they notice any problems that need attention.

When will my child have all of their baby teeth?

Your child should have all of their baby teeth by the time they are three years old. Each child is different so it could be earlier or later, but that is the general age. Over the next ten years, the baby teeth will fall out to make way for the permanent teeth. Throughout that time, Dr. Engel will keep an eye on your child’s teeth and their progress to spot and treat any problems that arise. Keeping your child’s teeth healthy is our priority.

What should my child expect during the appointment?

Establishing regular dentist appointments as part of your child’s routine will help them become familiar with the office, the professionals,  and the procedures. To help, your child can expect to enter a friendly environment that calms them.

After parents fill out any necessary paperwork, your child will be shown to an exam room to briefly wait for the dentist. Until then, a dental assistant will set your child up in the chair. The dentist will come in to provide an examination, which may include x-rays or other imaging.

The dentist may use toys, finger puppets, or other methods to keep your child calm.

A dental hygienist will clean your child’s teeth. Dr. Engel will talk to you and your child about how to take care of their teeth at home. Before you leave, be sure to schedule the next appointment as your child picks out a toy to take home with them.

Are x-rays safe for my child?

While Dr. Engel will only order an x-ray if necessary, parents should know that x-rays are perfectly safe for children. Advancements in technology have provided x-rays that use less radiation as well as alternative imaging methods to choose from.

How does Dr. Engel handle children who won’t stay still?

Dr. Engel understands that not all children will stay still during the examination. They may even become unruly. But Dr. Engel can employ several techniques to keep your child calm. Speaking to them softly on their level helps a lot. Dr. Engel may also use toys and finger puppets to entertain your child.

If absolutely necessary and with parental permission, Dr. Engel may use nitrous oxide to sedate your child. You can rest assured that Dr. Engel will try every technique in his bag of tricks to keep your child calm and safe throughout the appointment.

Is nitrous oxide safe for children?

Nitrous oxide is perfectly safe for children. They won’t fall asleep but will relax and feel floaty, warm, and tingly. This will allow the dentist to proceed. Your child will likely not even remember the procedure. There are no long-term side effects from nitrous oxide, and minor side effects such as tiredness or feeling groggy will quickly go away.

Can I be in the exam room with my child?

Parents can and should absolutely be in the exam room with their child. Your presence will help keep your child calm and the dentist will be able to keep you informed about your child’s oral health. You will also be right there if Dr. Engel needs to ask you any questions or needs your permission to perform x-rays or use nitrous oxide.
